Translation: an example of Benjamins Philosophy of History

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2011

Abstract

The study pursues Benjamins philosophy of history, and more precisely his conception of a truly historical action. The main aim of the study is to show how Benjamin conceives a historical truth.

On the basis of Benjamins theory of language and in connection with his speculative interpretatiton of the role of language in "tragic drama", the study explicates Benjamins concept of "meaning" in history. It then tries to demostrate translation as an example of the truly historical action.

In this interpretation, the "messianic" dimension of Benjamins concept of history is situated not somewhere "above" the history, but in it.
