Global Drug Trade and the Drug Wars - A Case Study from Mexico

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2011

Abstract

The article considers various aspects of the growing global drug trade, in recent decades. We use an analysis of current Mexican political instability as a case study.

Economic reforms, implemented during the 1990s, provided an important stimulus for the growing drug business, by leading to a freer but also less controlled market. Current anti-drug policies are not meeting their goals; this fact may be illustrated in the violence between drug cartels and law-enforcement institutions in Mexico.
