Abstract
The article analyzes basic features of literary descriptions in Old Norse skaldic poetry with the focus on the descriptions of sea and sea voyages. The article tries to connect these features to their literary and non-literary functions in the Norse society of the Viking Age and the Scandinavian Middle Ages.
