"And What About Children?...": Gay and Lesbian Parenthood

Publication |
2004

Abstract

The article examines discussions about homosexuality and the Registerested Partnership, which have been an integral part of the public discourse about democracy, human rights and freedom of expression ever since the collapse of Communism. In the course of the last ten years, furious and often intuitive debates about "abnormality" and "perversion" have transformed into balanced debates about the essence of civil society, discrimination and respect to diversity unless the topic of children appears.

The question of parenthood or "homosexual family" have become a litmus paper of tolerance in the Czech society, its ability to reflect its own prejudices and stereotypes. The article introduces and analyzes the fundamental arguments, myths and stereotypes, which most often appear in discussions about homosexuality, family and parenthood.
