The aim of this study was to test the validity of the standards of dental maturation of Demirjian and Goldstein (1976), and the standards of Chaillet and Demirjian (2004) for the contemporary population of South West of France. The sample comprised 911 children aged between 5 and 18 years, and examined between 2004 and 2010.
After the threshold of 16 years old, the standards of Demirjian and Goldstein (1976) and the standards of Chaillet and Demirjian (2004) give a false age estimation. So we studied the 5 to 15 years group particularly.
Dental age of French children of the sample is dentally advanced compared to the standards of Demirjian and Goldstein (1976) in the 5 to 15 years group. The mean overestimation was 0.51 - 0.3 years in this group.
The utilisation of the Chaillet and Demirjian standards in the 5 to 15 group give a higher accuracy of age prediction. The mean difference was -0.07 0.33 years.
The standards of dental maturation described by Demirjian and Goldstein (1976) may not be suitable for children of South West France. Those of Chaillet and Demirjian (2004) are appropriate for current children.
