There are two types of childhood speech disorders - developmental and acquired. Different aspects of language disorders can be present in both types (comprehension, articulation, fluency, prosody or pragmatic use of language).
The most common specific syndromes are reviewed in this article. The speech disorders can be found as a symptom in other disorders, for example in pervasive developmental disorders, mental retardation, psychotic disorders and other mental illnesses in the childhood and adolescence.
