In her novel Sweet Darusya Maria Matios tries to activate Ukrainian history (1930s - 1970s in the Bukovina region) and to provoke an emotional reaction to the tragedy bound to historical events. The aim of the article is to study the selected means by which the author reaches the above-mentioned effect.
These means participate on creating the structure of the novel and its style. First, the article focusses on the "types of literary speech" and their relation, second, it analyzes the chosen motives related to these types (the motif of silence in contrast to the motif of noise).
