The paper focuses on the tools of story-structuring in the TV serials by Jaroslav Dietl. The structure keeps quite strictly to Gustav Freytag's classical five-phase model derived from antique drama.
The scheme is employed on three levels: in the structure of the serial as whole, in the micro- structure of individual episodes, and, finally, in particular storylines marked by salient motifs and winding through various episodes. This principle is illustrated by three serials displaying the development of Dietl's technique: Nejmladší z rodu Hamrů (1975), Žena za pultem (1977) and Nemocnice na kraji města (1978, 1981).
