ANALYSIS OF THE FLOOD-GENERATION MECHANISM IN THE OPAVA RIVER BASIN DOWN TO THE GAUGING STATION OPAVA

2011

Abstract

The study deals with flood mechanism of origin in the Opava river basin from several points of view. Examples of flood catalogue that contain information about weather conditions, meteorological causes and drainages are showed.

On the basis of this information, the main features of flood mechanism in the Opava river basin were described. 45 flood episodes from the period 1960-2007 were selected and analysed in flood catalogue. These collected data were applied to evaluate seasonal landscape strain and changes in flood regime during the 20th century.

The hydrosynoptic analysis of causal weather conditions (its occurrence and progress in pre-culmination phase) was also carried out. This study focuses on relation between atmosphere circulation conditions and flood waves in connection with temporal and spatial distribution of causal precipitation.

These findings about floods in the Opava river basin together with multivariate statistical analysis were applied to classify the summer and winter flood situations according to common features (cause of origin, progress of flood waves. Common attributes of rainfall-runoff events mechanism of origin in particular flood groups are also described.
