Christ with movable arms from Litovel - its form and function

Abstract

This chapter deals with the artistic aspect of the unique sculpture of Christ from Litovel, in relation to its special liturgical function. The function determined the size, the proportions and the closed outline of the sculptural form.

The emphasis on the blood flowing from the wounds corresponds to the annual liturgical reminiscence of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. This aimed at a greater participation of laymen and a more authentic experience of the substance of Easter.
