Glaciation in the High Tatra Mountains

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2010

Abstract

Terrain data suggest several episodes during which the High Tatra Mountains were glaciated during the Quaternary. The fact that the High Tatras' Pleistocene glaciations were spatially asymmetrical generates debates among researchers about the number and extend of these glaciations.

The best conditions for glaciation and the biggest volume of the glacial mass occurred during the Last Glacial Period (Würm), resulting from several factors such as changes in atmospheric circulation and evolution of the mountains' topography.
