Pictures without stories? Literary Inspiration in Gabriel von Max's Work

Abstract

The study deals with the relationship between literary text and its pictorial representation in the work of Gabriel von Max. Literary inspiration forms an important part of his artwork, but this is not a conventional "literary painting" of the 19th century, as shown in the picture of Max's Julia Capulet morning of the wedding (1874), which indicates predecadent aesthetization of the morbid.
