Pipelines belong to constructions crosscutting landscape in distances of dozens, hundreds, in larger projects even of thousands of kilometers. Geological conditions and factors limit the selection of routes for pipelines especially regarding geological hazards, represented by landslides, erosion, karst phenomena, seismic and tectonic activity etc.
All geological hazards must be taken account for construction of pipelines in the stage of construction as well as during its operation. The paper deals with geological hazards affecting pipeline construction and operation, example from gas and oil pipeline construction in Sakhalin Island, where ARCADIS Geotechnika, a.s. (formerly SG Geotechnika, a.s.) participated as a geologist of contractor in hilly area of Makarov region, is presented.
Based on example of Sakhalin, basic principles of landslide mitigation in construction of pipelines in hilly landscape are demonstrated.
