Abstract

Spanish-American modernism is part of an intellectual movement which appeared across the Western culture at the end of the 19th century, and which brought significant changes in the field of culture and politics. Paris became the centre of art and fashion, the dream of the artists from both sides of the Atlantic.

It also became the lot of the Guatemalan author Enrique Gómez Carrillo (1873-1927), who represents the cosmopolitan and frivolous facets of the movement. Tha article discusses his novels a focusses also on his journalistic "chronicles" in the context of the lifestyle and literary style of the end of the century.
