The paper deals with the development of differences in the level of total fertility in EU members at the regional level NUTS 2. For this purpose, the European Union is divided into eastern and western part by former geopolitical arrangement.
The reasons for this division are different trends in the intensity of fertility in the monitored period. The paper calculated indicators of variability and dependence.
Cartograms are also designed to allow visually assess the development of regional differentiation of total fertility. In the western part of the European Union was not found a trend towards convergence in fertility intensity and spatial picture of fertility remained stable.
In the East, the spatial picture of fertility greatly changed, but this did not lead to increasing regional differentiation in fertility, which was more influenced by the general decrease of the intensity of fertility.
