Abstract
As one of its major principles the spiritualist movement promoted the independence from all religions and religious institutions. Breaking away from the church and its ceremonies determined the baptisms, weddings, and funerals of spiritualists.
Based on studies of spiritualist communities in Silesia in the fi rst half of the last century, this article describes the course and circumstances of spiritualist funerals and puts emphasis on some of its characteristic features and new symbols.
