The article interprets Franz Kafka's short story "The City Coat of Arms" ("Das Stadtwappen") against the backdrop of a statement of Libuše Moníková in her novel "Pavane für eine verstorbene Infantin" ("Pavane for a Dead Infanta"), with which she ties (not only) this text of Kafka more than usual to the place of his origin in Prague. In contrast, the research has been mostly advocated to solve Kafka's texts entirely of such contexts.

The analysis shows, however, how accurate "The City Coat of Arms" can be related to the specific cross-cultural situation of Prague in the early 20th Century. This has, moreover, hinted Kurt Krolop already, to whom this essay, published in an anthology to mark his 80th birthday, is dedicated.
