Czech Contexts of Latvian Cultural Traditions

Publication

Abstract

This work is based on the many years of the author's theoretical and practical activities in the field of Czech-Latvian literary and cultural relations and also on the increased interest in the heritage of the Moravian Church which has been demonstrated in recent years both on the Latvian and the Czech sides. The author examines certain Latvian cultural traditions and their Czech contexts, especially based on specific Latvian texts and their meaning which is co-created by the context.

At the same time, he seeks a dialogical movement between the structural-semiotic and reception-hermeneutic approaches, between the synthesis and analysis, deduction and induction with the focus on specific phenomena. The work has been structured according to the Comenius' programme of an improvement of the "wisdom of mind", "piousness of heart" and "peace of life": in these fields also the ideas of the Czech religious reformation had some influence in Latvia.
