Dr. Rebecca Gomperts (1966), the founder and director of the organization Women on Waves, studied medicine and visual arts in Amsterdam.
In 1999 Gomperts started Women on Waves, a non-profit abortion rights organization concerned with woman right. It operates a mobil clinic on a ship that sails to countries where abortion is illegal.
Its mission is to prevent unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortions throughout the world. Rebecca has received the MS Women of the year 2001 award, the Women making History award, the Clara Meier-Wichmann Penning of 2002 and has been involved among 1000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 for her work.
She has written a novel Zeedrift and published articles and essays. Rebecca gave birth to her first daughter in 2005 and continues fighting for women rights.
