Seyla Benhabib: The claims of culture. Equality and diversity int the global era.
The book review: This book begins with quoting Václav Havel in his calling for creation of self-understanding of world civilization as ?multicultural and multipolar one?. But the question Benhabib tries to answer is how to create such a self-understanding, namely how we should understand culture and what legitimate claims can be made based on cultural argument.
She introduces us to the problem of to what degree should culturally various society publicly take into account differences rising from co-existence of cultures within one societal setting. And she answers right away that on the level of polity she defends constitutional and legal universalism but on the level of regional and local parliaments she sees space for certain kinds of legal pluralism and institutional power-sharing.
