Abstract
It is an attempt, following the analyses put forward by Ruth Benedict in her Chrysanthemum and the Sword, to show how established orthodoxies of war, which represent part of the western civilization, are reflected in selected passages of Hasek's Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka.
