The book investigates groups of non-sedentary people in Early-Modern Bohemia; people determined by their temporary or permanent lack of patrimonial bond to authorities. Apart from legal and practical aspects of persecution of these groups, among others Gypsies, the author explores - based chiefly on trial records - their self-perception and survival strategies.
The book looks for the connection between personal identification, population control, delimitation of borders, and the establishment of modern state.
