The Man between Extent and the Landscape. Introductory word

Abstract

Against the reductive tendencies of the mathematical conception of space, this publication attempts to present a variety of experience and understanding of space across various fields of study. The starting point is the confrontation between Descartes conception of space as a mere spaciality of bodies and a much more complex Heideggerian motif of the spaciality of human existence and the spacial constitution of the relation between man and the world.

For instance, the link between spaciality and speech, through which mans inhabitation of the world comes to be constituted, appears as a key topic. The other perspectives presented are more or less connected with the principal motives of the philosophical confrontation mentionned above.

They concern the theory of architecture, certain elements of the experience of the body proper and various aspects of spaciality in literary works and visual arts. The publication cannot present an exhaustive systematic survey of the question of constitution of space, but
