Abstract

The article employs gender as a methodological category of literary analysis applied to Vladimír Páral's novel Professional Woman. Gender stereotypes, objectification of women and gender power relations as they are portrayed in the novel represent the main foci of the analysis.

Further, the article discusses the historical context of the 1970s in which the novel came into being. Thus, the aim of the article is also to look for strategies Páral used in order to balance out his efforts to become a successful writer popular with readers on the hand, and to remain in conformity with the communist censorship on the other hand.
