Abstract

The text is based on the author's M.A. thesis "Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili" focusing on the production process of TV serial. The process is examined by semiotic analytical tools.

The article views the research introduced in the thesis and its conclusions from a different perspective: It focuses on a specific formation of production ideology in the context of cultural studies as researched by Elena Levine. The analysis in this work is inspired by Levine's differentiation of five elementary categories influencing production.

Within five delineated areas, qualitative interviews with key professionals present in the production of the TV serial are analyzed with the help of data from participant observation. Interviews were conducted and analyzed by the method of grounded theory.

The results of analyses present a specific description of the production of the Czech TV serial supported by the unique position of an insider researcher. In the five areas allowing for the circulation of ideas, the production environment is accentuated, which is formed, for the most part, by the producer, Czech Television (Ostrava).

This specific environment is a source of mythology of exceptionality, which is the main ideological background of the production of the serial.
