Abstract
This article deals with the key stages of the development in the radio news programmes in the Czech Republic from 1990 till present. It outlines the break up of state monopoly on radio news programmes and the circumstances leading to the creation of private radio stations.
In addition, it describes changes in the purposes of the radio broadcasting and changes in the genre composition of radio news programmes. Finally, it notes selected results from the research on the changes in the language quality of various news programmes and radio listeners' surveys.
