Anne of Silesia and her foundations

Abstract

Th e study deals with the daughter of Přemysl Otakar I Anne, who married Silesian duke Henry II. Pious.

Anne is one of the noble ladies who chose, under the influence of spiritual atmosphere of the time, the ascetic way of life connected to charity and foundations. She was mainly inspired by her relatives, mother-in-law Hedwig of Andechs and younger sister Agnes of Bohemia.

She began to be concerned with charity work and foundations aft er the tragic battle of Legnica in 1241 where her husband Henry II. Pious died.

With the help of her off spring she carried out the reconstruction of the Franciscan monastery of Wroclaw, founded the Benedictine monastery of Krzeszow and introduced the order of Crusaders with red star into Silesia. She also founded the hospital of Saint Elizabeth.

Above all she founded the monastery of the Poor Clares that became the mausoleum of the Silesian branch of the Piast Dynasty.
