The opening part of the study discusses prerequisities for the implementation of potential reforms in Czechoslovakia in the early stage of perestroika, i.e. during the period immediately following the appointment of Mikhail Gorbachev to the post of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU. A substantial part of the text consists of an analysis of measures the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia's leadershipadopted to react to the January 1987 plenary session of the Central Committee of the CPSU, which gave a decisive impetus to launching a Czechoslovak version of the perestroika process.
The work is based mainly on studies of archival documents of the Central Committee Of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
