Psychosocial aspects of prenatal examinations - review

Abstract

This review article deals with an actual issue that is rather neglected in current Czech scientific publications. Whilst medical aspects of prenatal checkups are frequently discussed in expertstudies, psychosocial aspects are often beyond the scope of such papers.

Nowadays, general public disposes of unlimited access to information regarding these examinations. However, it happens quite often that such knowledge is not complete or tends to downgrade the prenatal checkup or selectively and with no context emphasize its deficiencies.

By not well-informed women, high percentage of incidence of anxienty or negative feelings in general occurs, that influences not only compliance with health professionals, but also the quality of woman's and her family's life in particular period. The review shows women's expectations from the time of pregnancy to childbirth, possoble dysfunctional schemes, reaction to bad news and its development in time.

Particular psychosocial aspects are to be summed up in results of foreign studies handling this subject.
