Today millions people in the world suffer corneal blindness. An artificial cornea is an option for patients whose corneal blindness can not be managed by standard corneal transplantation with tissue from a donor.
A 72-year-old man with Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid in both eyes had undergone AlphaCor keratoprosthesis implantation in the left eye 5 years earlier. Preoperatively, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the left eye was 0.002.
Postoperatively, BCVA of the left eye was improved to 0.1. 18 months after the artificial cornea implantation a complicated cataract operation in the same eye was carried out. Postoperatively, BCVA of the left eye was improved to 0.3.
AlphaCor is the result of many years of laboratory and clinical research. A lot of complications and risk factors have been identified.
Managing patients after AlphaCor implantation is a hard, long-term, responsible process.
