Publication at Faculty of Physical Education and Sport |
2012

Abstract

Olympic Values and Ethics in Contemporary Society is a publication of the Olympic Chair Henri Baillet-Latour/Jaques Rogge, University of Ghent, exploring various aspects of the philosophy and practice of Olympism, and of the ethical and political challenges it faces. Three chapters by Jim Parry address issues such as the values of the Olympic Movement, the nature and justification of physical education, and an in-depth discussion of doping, deception and cheating.

A fourth chapter considers various values issues arising from the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games in 2010, such as equality of opportunity, age fairness and age falsification, immaturity and harm, exploitation, excellence and participation, cultural exceptionalism, and contest refusal on political grounds.
