Bioactive compounds of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.) and their use in malaria therapy

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2012

Abstract

Sweet wormwood is the main natural botanical source for artemisinin. Artemisinin, an endoperoxide sesquiterpene lactone in the aerial parts of A. annua L., is more efficacious, faster and less toxic than chloroquine in treating malaria.

This review examines the antimalarial effects of artemisinin, evaluating its limitations and its considerable potential for development of new antimalarial medicine.
