The Czech language at the beginning of the 21st century is characterised by processes of cultural and social globalisation and internationalisation of languages (especially at its lexical level). The paper deals with the Czech language system in its function as a foreign language.
Spheres of present communication and their corresponding language competences to which foreign students of Czech are trained are taken into consideration. We therefore discuss also the measure to which using Czech means a natural process to foreign students, what are their sources of language information and possibilities of interaction with native Czech speakers, as well as their motivation to study Czech.
The choice of adequate teaching methodology is illustrated on authentic examples from the author's teaching of Czech to Korean students.
