Abstract

Using a variety of contemporary sources, the book analyses the phenomenon of traveling in the nineteenth century, especially journeys to world exhibitions. The topic is treated from the history of everyday life point of view.

The author deals with various aspects of travel, including travel arrangements, transport, accommodation, meals and travel guides. She also discusses the impact of travelling abroad on Czech tourists, their experience with foreign cultures and nations, and their self-reflection motivated by the confrontation with a foreign environment.

The book is complemented by contemporary illustrations, list of all world's fairs and their congresses held in the 19th century and contemporary list of travel guides
