Some differences between Czech and Russian: a parallel corpus study

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |

Abstract

We present a comparative study of some constructions in Czech and Russian. Though Czech and Russian are closely related Slavic languages, they have a few differences at the level of syntax, morphology and their semantics.

We discuss incongruities that we found in a parallel Czech-Russian corpus, mainly reflecting differences in the sentence structure. The linguistic evidence presented in the paper will be used while constructing the transfer module of a rule-based machine translation system between Czech and Russian.
