Vowel length as a phonetics and phonological phenomenon exists both in French and Czech. However, its status and nature differ in the linguistic systems of the two languages.
This doctoral thesis, which has been supervised both in France and the Czech Republic, focuses on the role of vowel quantity inside phonetics and phonological systems and thus explains pronunciation difficulties with vowel quantity characteristic for French and Czech native speakers who learn Czech or French respectively. The results of my research will consequently outline different ways of improving their pronunciation leading to successful language acquisition.
