The Quality of Teacher Educators in the European Policy Debate

Abstract

There is a common consensus that teachers are the most important factor influencing the quality of pupils' learning. Analogously, teacher educators have the most important influence on the quality of the student-teachers' learning and so they influence the quality of schooling generally.

The issue of the quality of teacher educators then might be seen as a paramount topic. Until recently, little attention has been paid to the profession of teacher educators.

Neither the qualitative standard of teacher education nor the definition of teachers' professional expectations has existed. Therefore this topic was included in the agenda of the European Commission in 2009.

In this paper, we come with the summary of how the matters of teacher educators have been elaborated. We explore, which appeals are formulated towards the member states, including the teacher educators in the Czech Republic.
