Uncle Kim's Cabin: stories of Korean slaves

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe life and individual stories of Korea slaves (nobi) as seen in literati anecdotes recorded in their collection Ŏu yadam 於于野譚 written by Yu Mongin 柳夢寅 (1559-1623). These texts provide us unique opportunity to analyze both stories of individual slaves but at the same time also attitudes of their owners and ideological stereotypes surrounding their existence.

Typical figures of a loyal or talented slave show us interesting reflection of slaves as human beings fully integrated into concepts of Confucian ideology with their obligations and chances in relation to their masters.
