Abstract

Population of elders is growing worldwide, particularly in the last decades. Finding ways of prolonging self-sufficiency of the elderly persons is a more upcoming topic ever.

This paper concerns research of effectiveness of a memory training in cognitively intact elders from the Beroun region. The training was a lectured group training consisting of 10 meetings (60min, 1x/week), which were mainly focused on mnemonics, training of memory, attention and coordination.

Criteria for inclusion into a sample for statistical analysis were: age 60+, MMSE GREATER-THAN OR EQUAL TO 25 points, absenting maximally 3 lectures and no experience with similar intervention. Average age of the sample was 73 years (range 62 - 89 years).

Data gathering took place before and after the training, and 10 weeks afterwards by means of Auditory verbal learning test, Memory questionnaire, Cognitive failure questionnaire, Beck depression inventory-II and Schwartz outcome scale-10. Participants improved their performance in memory test, however, in self-report measures on memory and other cognitive functions, mood and well-being no effect of the training was found.
