Reading literacy and evaluation of the test material PIRLS 2001

Abstract

My paper summarizes and defines what reading literacy means, why it is important for the life in the society and how it can be understood. It analyses one test book from PIRLS 2001 (Progress In Reading Literacy Study) used in the Czech Republic from several touchstones, mainly the difficulty of the text, semantic and syntactic factor.

It evaluates their suitability for Czech fourth-grade learners and analyses its possibility of application in future research to support the reading literacy development in education and for future analyses of current state of reading literacy in Czech schools.
