Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry - the reference method for the assessment of body composition and bone density

Abstrakt
A theoretical study of Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) which is long considered the gold-standard reference method for the assessment of body composition and of determining the strength of a patients bones DEXA method remains the gold standard for bone density measurement and fracture risk assessment. The paper describes the principle of DEXA; the authors argue about the suitability of its present day application, about its positives and negatives, validity and reliability, they present studies, in which DEXA was compared with computed tomography (CT) reference method.
In conclusion, the authors present recommend DEXA as one of the most powerful reference methods for the assessment of body composition.
