Abstract
In this contribution there are analysed the names of the products, launched to the market in the period between 1982 and 2010 and actively used in the professional as well as in common everyday life. The naming of basic data carriers: compact disc, digital multipurpose disc, blu-ray disc, data tresor disc and their abbreviations CD, DVD, BD and DTD.
In the contribution there is described the process of their abbreviating and their functioning in Czech and Bulgarian languages, pointing to the differences, occurring due to different typological features of the mentioned languages.
