Baby Talk in Romani

Abstract

Based on following field research in one romani speech community, the article gives basic overview of structural and discursive phenomena of baby talk register in particular romani variety. The register is also looked upon in broader perspective of the community's culture and socialization practices.

Baby talk in the studied community have a common characteristics of this register in other languages containing same extension of its usage beyond child directed communication. It borrows some features from baby talk register of Slovak, which is the second code of the bilingual romani speech community.

At the same time the romani baby talk register handles with the material of the matrix society language independently in some ways and it shows some cultural depended differences as well.
