Abstrakt
Tsubouchi Shōyō (1854-1823) was a leading scholar in the field of theory of literature. This article deals with his approach to Japanese aesthetics.
As a conviced realist he engaged in several discussions with promiment Japanese aesthetician and other intelectuals of his times. His own aesthetics could be found in The Essence of the Novel (Shōsetsu shinzui).
