Abstract
Knowledge of the original overburden thikness overlying sediments is important for solving various geological and geotechnical problems. This article summarizes findings on the influence of overconsolidation on the horizontal stress in clayey mass, the methods available for determining of the overburden thikness, their use and their suitability in terms of soil mechanics.
The area of interest is the Carpathian foredeep near the city of Brno. Sedimentation here Miocene clays, known as the Brno Tegel.
