De Facto States: Invisible Islands on the Political Map

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2013

Abstract

The article focuses on de facto states – entities that function and behave as independent countries but lack international recognition. At the beginning the authors define de facto state and then discuss causes of their establishment and occurrence (e.g., nationalism or politics) and factors enabling them to survive in a long term (e.g., geopolitics or economy).

The arguments are supported by evidence from all 11 entities that currently correspond to the definition of de facto state.
