Anatomical study of flexor hallucis brevis insertion: Implications for clinical praktice

2011

Abstract

The flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) is one of the short muscles of the foot. The detailed knowledge of its insertion into the proximal phalangeal base is decisive in any surgery involving the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint The aim of this study was to describe in detail the morphology of FHB insertion sites and to determine a safe extent of resection to be done at the base of the proximal phalanx.

Our results show that to preserve at least one third of the FHB insertion, the final resection should not exceed 4 mm or 13 % of the proximal phalangeal length. The flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) is one of the short muscles of the foot.
