Optimal use of topical corticosteroids and immunomodulators in long-term therapy of atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease with fluctuating clinical course.
The managament is determined by the severity of symptoms. It should be comprehensive, differentiated and individualized.
Many factors contribute to the pathogenesis, therefore the basic principle is the combination therapy that can be administered simultaneously or sequentially. The use of combinations of several agents may increase both the efficacy and the safety of treatment.
In moderate to severe disease the proactive strategy is used with long-term maintenance topical corticosteroids and/or immunomodulators, where the interval regimen is frequently appropriate. Irreplaceable role in the therapy is represented by regular phycian follow-up visits with understandable and repeated patient education about treatment plan and strategy.
