The treatment used for narcolepsy, either pharmacological or behavioral, are diverse. Several treatments are used on an empirical basis, especially antidepressants for cataplexy, as these medications are already used widely in depressed patients, leaving little motivation from the manufacturers to investigate their efficacy in relatively rare indications.
Modafinil and sodium oxybate have been evaluated in large randomized placebo-controlled trials. Our objective was to reach a consensus on the use of these two drugs and of other available medications.
