Superficial thrombophlebitis is a common venous disease, usually considered to be benign. However, the practice os systemic duplex ultrasonography has revealed a large number of cases of deep vein thrombosis concominant with superficial thrombophlebitis.
The treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis should improve local symptoms while preventing thedevelopment of complications such as venous thromboembolism. The most effective therapeutic approach to thrombophlebitis seems to be represented by fondaparinux (a synthetic selective inhibitor of factor Xa) which have been shown to prevent thromboembolic events and the extension and/or reccurrence of superfitial thrombophlebitis.
